STORYLINE:
A pause in fighting due to an Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement has given residents of Gaza City a chance to assess the catastrophic damage after seven weeks of Israel’s ground invasion and heavy bombardment.
The few buildings still standing have their windows blown out and their foundations shaken.
The rest have become giant piles of rubble, with vast craters in the dirt taking over what used to be one of the main streets in the heart of Gaza City, the upscale neighbourhood of Rimal that housed media offices, foreign aid groups, businesses, hotels and Gazan restaurants.
Footage from Sunday shows the complete destruction of Gaza’s two main universities, Al Azhar and the Islamic universities, the uniquely designed Rashad Shawa Cultural built in 1985, the Palestinian legislative council building and and the courtyard inside Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s biggest and most advanced facility of its kind.
The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was back on track Sunday as the militants freed 17 more hostages, including 14 Israelis and the first American, in a third exchange under a four-day truce that the U.S. said it hoped would be extended. In turn, Israel released 39 Palestinian prisoners.
This is the first significant pause in seven weeks of war, marked by the deadliest Israeli-Palestinian violence in decades. More than 13,300 Palestinians have been killed, roughly two thirds of them women and minors, according to the Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza. The war has claimed more than 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians killed in the initial attack.
